Watersports in Spain

You name it you can do it on the water in Spain – there are tremendous facilities for water sport enthusiasts. You can rent all types of equipment and many areas offer courses in sailing, canoeing and water skiing. Yachting is big in Spain and will get even more important in 2007 when the America's Cup will be held in Valencia - mainly because of the near perfect weather conditions.

Diving

The visibility in this part of the Mediterranean Sea is very good, especially at the locations further away from the coast like at La Llosa and the island of Benidorm (link to Benidorm area page). There, visibility of 20 to 40 meters approx. 65 to 130ft is quite normal. There are, of course, days with heavy seas but these are rare and there are plenty of dive sites to choose from so you should find at least one with calm seas. Temperatures vary from 13 degrees in January to 24 degrees in July and August. Wreck and deep diving is popular in Costa Blanca – a favourite is the cargo liner lying at a depth of 144 feet.

Snorkelling

There are an abundance of places to snorkel and dive in Spain. Snorkeling is of course something that pretty well any swimmer can do as long as they have their snorkel, facemask and flippers!

The seas are quite calm and the tides can be gentle but all of the usual safety precautions must be followed at all times - a diving permit is obligatory in Spanish waters - these are inexpensive and can be obtained from the many clubs and schools.

Sailing

The 32nd America's Cup in 2007 hosted in Valencia is a real first. Never before has the America's cup been held in Europe and there is great kudos attached to the selection of Valencia. Consistently reliable weather conditions were key to making this decision to hold the America's Cup in Valencia and the event will create huge interest amongst the keen yachtsmen all over the world. Now would be a good time to invest in Spanish property. www.americascup.com

The Mar Menor is a fantastic spot for yachting as are the marina’s at Santa Pola and Alicante. There is also some great wind powered kite surfing going on at Arenales del Sol and Tamarit beach in Santa Pola.
