Orihuela
Orihuela
is the capital of the Vega Baja region of the southern Costa
Blanca. The town is actually 20 km inland on the A7 at junction
80 and the CV95 between Murcia City and Elche. The area has
a population of over 75,000 and there is sometimes some confusion
as mainly of the coastal towns of La Zenia, Cabo Roig and
Playa Flamenca are referred to as being Orihuela Costa.
The capital is best known for its wonderful fiestas, churches,
monasteries and its distinguished cultural heritage. Nowadays
there is a real combination of new and old; the older region
sits on the northern banks of the River Segura.
Try to be around during Easter when the Burial Procession
Fiesta is in full swing – this is the time when the
female incarnation of the devil “Diables” occurs
and the atmosphere is brilliant in the city streets.
There is a fascinating irrigations system in the local farmlands
which dates back to the Moors. Wonderful crops of citrus fruit,
almonds, dates, hemp and beautiful carnations are cultivated
in the region.
As more an more people in search of more authentic Spanish
towns away from the tourist areas opt for inland Spain Orihuela
