Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Calida
La Manga
La
Manga is in fact the 22 km x 300 m wide strip of land on the
Costa Calida that divides (or joins) the Mediterranean Sea
from the Mar Manor. La Manga has more than 40 km of beaches,
mainly sandy and it’s a very unusual land formation
so not surprising that in the 1960’s it was discovered
and embraced by the tourist industry – always in search
of something unique to attract wealthy visitors.
La Manga is particularly popular with Spanish tourists, many
city dwellers owning their holiday homes along the busy strip
- hence the number of elegant apartment blocks.
Years ago La Manga was considered to be a poor fishing town
– but not now and especially since La Manga club was
built nearby at the foot of the Murcian hills in 1971. The
famous club soon became a flag ship for top class sport resorts
and attractive many national football teams with its superb
training facilities and luxurious surroundings. “La
Cola” is the name of the private beach at the club –
it’s surprisingly small and there are a good many steps
down to it – but the views are beautiful. Indeed the
views across the golf courses at La Manga are also spectacular,
as are the prices!
Veneziola at the northern part of La Manga is the most peaceful,
with its bridges, canals and new Marina. A really relaxing
spot away from the crazy tourists.
This is an ideal location for water sport enthusiasts and
for those who just like watching what’s going on in
and around the water. There’s a good ferry service that
runs from Santiago de la Ribera to La Manga – it takes
about 30 minutes to cross and you get a totally different
perspective of the land and sea from the boat.
The strip can get quite congested during peak summer season
so pick your time to visit with that in mind.
There have been some excellent new apartments built at the
end of the strip by Euromarina and TM – there are a
few new still for sale and a good number of resale options.
The complexes have superb communal pools and gardens and as
you would expect the views are amazing. Next time you are
flying in to San Javier airport make sure you get a window
seat – the views as you cross La Manga and the Mar Menor
are fantastic.
