Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Blanca South
Guardamar del Segura
At
the mouth of the river Segura, on the southern Costa Blanca,
this lively town is a popular holiday resort with Spanish
people. Guardamar has 12 km of fine sandy beaches and some
really lovely parks. The town has an interesting history going
back over centuries – it’s worth visiting the
Casa Cultura (House of Culture) which houses many historical
artifacts from Guardamar’s past.
Parque Reina Sofia (Queen Sofia Park) is a great place for
a picnic, La Gola, where the river meets the sea – is
ideal for water sports, and the Parque Natural de Laguna de
La Mata, which includes the La Mata salt lake, is a popular
area for horse riding, cycling and walking...
Guardamar has many fine Blue Flag beaches including Los Viveros,
Playa Centro, El Monacayo and of course not forgetting its
naturist beach Los Tusales. With the emerald green forests
and deep blue sea it’s no wonder people call Guardamar
one of the prettiest towns in the Valencia region. The mighty
sand dunes are protected by the forest, which is said to have
saved the population of Guardamar in the earthquake of the
early 1820’s.
It’s a easy journey from Alicante airport just 35 km
north of Guardamar and whilst car rental is still cheap and
convenient in Spain there are buses that run every half hour
on weekdays, less frequent on Sunday and Bank Holidays.
There is an excellent medical center in Guardamar and all
of the shopping and general amenities you could possibly need
including a really good market every Wednesday and Sunday
where you can get just about anything all at typically low
prices.
From March to September there are many Fiesta’s in
Guardamar – the town really does party and the colourful
decorations all around make for a happy festival atmosphere
as all generations gather to enjoy the fireworks and celectrations.
Guardamar property can be a little bit more expensive that
neighbouring towns but when you see what it has to offer in
return you’ll understand why.
