Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Blanca South
Aspe
Aspe
is a town and municipality located in the, in the valley of
the river Vinalopo, in the province of Alicante 25 km from
Alicante city and Alicante international airport is a 20 minute
drive. At the last census, taken in 1993, Aspe recorded 17,423
inhabitants but this figure has risen significantly over the
last three years, particularly with the influx of many European
nationals looking for “the Real Spain” with all
the facilities and amenities of modern Europe. Aspe’s
economy is based on textile and footwear industries and locally
farmed fruit and vegetables are on sale at the daily produce
market in the centre of town.
The
old town centre, still a great favourite for the whole family
with its pretty central square, a pleasant walk through the
old streets lined with traditional shops and town houses on
to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where you will find one of the
most attractive churches on the Costa Blanca along side a
casino!
Although one of the fastest growing towns in the area, with
it’s new indoor swimming pool and sport facility, the
mostly Spanish born inhabitants of Aspe maintain a genuine
sense of community, with little damage from tourism or over-development.
There are local doctors, schools, and a good selection of
shops, a Tuesday and Thursday street market where genuine
leather sandals can still be bought for as little as €5
Or
for even more excitement there is always Aspe United Football
with its stunning views from the football stadium –
even if the concrete seats in the stand are not the most comfortable
you have ever sat on.
Leaving the many restaurants and bars in the town of Aspe
behind, will find you’re right in the heart of one of
Spain's major wine producing areas dotted with vineyards where
one of the first things you notice are the grape vines with
bagged grapes. These are bagged in October and remain on the
vine to be eaten by households all over Spain on New Years
Eve.
If
you are looking for an opportunity to experience a genuinely
Spanish way of life, yet still have easy access to the cities
and beaches of the Costa Blanca, from Aspe in 20minutes you
will either be in Alicante city centre or sitting on the beach.
– The best of all worlds.
