Almeria

This is a very historic city at the foot of a mountain range on the coast of Almeria. Alcazaba, a huge Islamic fort, dominates the city which is now a thriving commercial and residential center. In years gone by the city was rich in textile trade through its large port.

Almería airport is located about 10 Kilometres east of the city centre at the end of AL12 dual carriage way. Local bus line 14 links the airport with the city centre train and bus station.

Almeria is a very beautiful city with the Nicolás Salmerón Park running along the coast. From here you will have some of the best panoramic views of the marina and the port. The streets of Tenor Iribarne and Concepción Arenal are great for people watching as you sit in one of the many bars enjoying the lovely climate that this city has all year round.

Not far from Almeria, you can enjoy excellent beaches and nature trails at the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve, the first marine-land reserve in Andalusia. Sierra Nevada Nature Reserve is also nearby.

There are several excellent museums in Almeria including Sala de Prehistoria and the Iberian & Roman exhibits are wonderful at Sala de Historia Antigua.

As you fly into to the Airport at Almeria you will see many fields covered with plastic greenhouses as Almeria is an important farming community producing huge quantities fruit and vegetables for export.

Almeria is well known for its wonderful traditional dishes such as "Gurullos" (stew with pasta), "Trigo" (stew with grains of wheat, herbs and beans) and the delicious "Gachas" a spicy clam. There are some really fine restaurants that are certainly worth a try:

• Marisqueria El Alcazar – very good fish & seafood
• Restaurant Sol de Almeria – typically Spanish found in the market
• Restaurant Alfareros – excellent lunchtime venue

Property here in Almeria is slightly less expensive that Costa Blanca and Costa Calida generally speaking. The choice is wide and varied and the majority of new builds are concentrated in the coastal areas.
